Comparing The 7936, 7937 and 8831

Cisco CP-7936

The Cisco 7936 phone is an IP conference room base station based on Polycom's Sound Station technology. Although the 7936 is an older model, many businesses still choose to use this phone due to their familiarity with the platform, and the cost savings associated with older hardware. The 7936 features two outboard microphone jacks to enable the use of optional, external microphones. One unique difference between the 7936 and the newer models is that the 36 uses a power interface module (PIM) with a  DC power supply unit - it is not POE capable. The 7936 supports both SIP and SCCP firmware as of the release of 8.3(2) and the SIP version is compatible with the release of 6.0 and 5.1 Cisco Unified Communications manager.

Frequently Asked Questions about the 7936

Does the 7936 support standard Power over Ethernet?

No, 7936 phones require a Power Injection Module (PIM), which must be plugged into the wall.

Does the 7936 ship with the PIM?

While the PIM is required in order to use the 7936, *it is not included*, and must be purchased separately. Now that the 7936 has been EoL for a few years, the PIMs have become somewhat scarce. This inflates the total cost of ownership for a 7936, making the newer conference phones a better choice for most buyers.

Does the 7936 have a wireless option?

No, the 7936 actually has the most required wiring of any Cisco conference phone, with 1 DC wall adapter "brick", 1 triangular Power Injection Module and 2 Ethernet cables required for operation.Microphone extension kits are also wired. For applications where less wiring clutter is a must, the 8831 is the strongest option from Cisco.

Is this phone "plug and play" or does it require additional setup to use?

Unlike a regular land line conference phone, the 7936 is a Voice over IP phone, and requires a call manager configuration to operate.

Cisco CP-7937

The Cisco 7937 conference station combines state of the art wideband speakerphone conferencing technologies with award winning Cisco voice communication technologies. The 7937 offers many improvements over its predecessors, including support for Power over Ethernet. The 7937 has expanded room coverage up to 30 feet by 40 feet with optional external microphone kits, also with support for a third party lapel microphone kit, making it well suited to even large conference room environments. Equipped with a larger backlit LCD screen, it is now easier to read from a distance, or in low light conditions. The 7937 supports both SIP and SCCP firmware as of the release of 8.3(2) and the SIP version is compatible with the release of 6.0 and 5.1 Cisco Unified Communications manager.

Frequently Asked Questions about the 7937

Does the 7937 support Power over Ethernet?
Yes, unlike the 7936, the 7937 does not require a specialized PIM when used in conjunction with a PoE capable switch or standard PWR-INJ module. Multiple power injection options are available upon request.

Can the 7937 be made to operate wirelessly?
No, the 7937 requires power to be delivered to the device over its Ethernet cable, requiring at least 1 cable to be run for operation.

Is this phone "plug and play" or does it require additional setup to use?
Unlike a land line, the 7937 is a Voice over IP phone, which requires a call manager configuration or specific VoIP service provider to operate.

Can I power this device with a DC Adaptor?
Not directly. The CP-7937G relies on Power over Ethernet, meaning you will need to connect it to a compatible PoE switch, or use a separate power injector  (CP-7937-PWR-SPL).

I want to use my PoE switch to power this phone - how far away from my switch can I deploy the 7937G?
The maximum recommended distance for PoE is 100 meters. If you need go further than this, we recommend using a local power source, such as a 7937-PWR-SPL or other compatible power injection system.

Cisco CP-8831

The new Cisco 8831 conference phone is a simple, scalable solution that meets the challenges of the most diverse rooms. It provides flexible deployment options and expansion by using up to two extension microphones, with the option for a daisy-chain configuration of two linked base stations for maximum coverage. The 8831 also builds upon the older conference phone models by separating the control panel from the main body of the device,  allowing users to operate the phone without awkwardly leaning across large tables, or dragging the entire device towards them. One notable difference is that for now the 8831 only supports SIP - a limitation that should be taken into consideration when selecting the right phone for your network.
